Sarah Stocking, second daughter of (518) Phebe5 Washburn, (136) Edward4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in CT on 26 Feb. 1758,[1] married Gideon5 Hurlburt (Jr.), son of Gideon4 and Deborah (Brainard) Hurlburt/Hurlbut, of Middletown, CT,[2] on 30 Sept. 1777 in Chatham, CT.[3] He was born on 20 Aug. 1755 in Haddam, CT,[4] a grandson of David3 and Mary (Savage) Hurlbut, and of Abijah and Esther (Smith) Brainerd, of Haddam.[5] He served as a Private in Capt. Joseph Blake’s Company from Chatham in 1776, in Capt. Joseph Churchill’s Company in 1777, and in Capt. Robinson’s Company in 1778 during the Revolutionary War, and they moved to Greene Co., NY, in 1789.[6] They were living in Chatham, CT, in the 1790 federal census,[7] and apparently moved to Greene Co., NY, by 1793.[8] They were presumably living in Freehold, Greene Co., NY, in the 1800 federal census,[9] and in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1810,[10] 1820,[11] and 1830 federal censuses,[12] where he was a farmer. He applied for a Revolutionary War Pension on 27 May 1833 from Durham, NY.[13] He died on 26 Dec. 1835 in Durham, Greene Co., NY,[14] and she died a widow on 23 Dec. 1841, aged 82 years.9 months, 27 days,[15] and they were both buried in Allen Teator Road Cemetery in Durham, Greene Co., NY.

            Sarah Stocking and Gideon Hurlburt (Jr.) had children, order uncertain:[16]

        4335     i   Annis Hurlburt, born ca. 1778 in Chatham, Middlesex Co., CT, supposedly married Jairus Chittenden (Jr.), son of Jairus and Rebecca (Hall) Chittenden,[17] on 14 Mar. 1814.[18] He was born on 17 May 1776 in Guilford, New Haven Co., CT.[19] She supposedly died on 21 Sept;. 1821 in Victory, Cayuga Co., NY,[20] but her burial location is unknown, and he remarried to Mary D. Elliot in 1822.[21] She died on 21 Feb. 1850 in Victory, Cayuga Co., NY, aged 73 years,[22] and he died on 28 May 1852 in Victory, NY,[23] and they were both buried in Victory Union Cemetery in Victory, Cayuga Co., NY.

        4336    ii   Chauncey6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born on 15 Aug. 1780 in Chatham, CT,[24] married Elizabeth “Betsy” Norton, of Durham, Greene Co., NY.[25] They were living in Broome, Schoharie Co., NY, in the 1820,[26] 1830,[27] and 1840 federal censuses,[28] where he was a farmer. He died on 2 Oct. 1840 in Broome, Schoharie Co., NY,[29] and she supposedly died in 1851,[30] but their burial location is unknown.

        4337   iv   Lovina Hurlburt, baptized on 27 July 1783 in Chatham, CT, died at age 18 in Greene Co., NY,[31] but her burial location is unknown.

        4338    v   Asaph6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born on 21 Oct. 1785 in Chatham, CT,[32] married 1.) Roxey Sage.[33] She was born on 11 May 1790 in NY.[34] They were living in Broome, Schoharie Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[35] and in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census.[36] She died on 26 July 1832, aged 42 years, 2 months, 15 days,[37] presumably in Greene Co., NY, was buried in Allen Teator Road Cemetery in Durham, Greene Co., NY. He remarried to 2.) Deborah Disbrow.[38] She was born ca. 1787 in CT or NY.[39] They were still living in Durham, NY, in the 1840,[40] and 1850 federal censuses,[41] the 1855 state census,[42] and the 1860 federal census,[43] and the 1865 state census,[44] where he was a farmer. He died on 12 Mar. 1866 in Durham, Greene Co., NY, aged 80 years,[45] and she died on 9 Feb. 1868, aged 80 years,[46] and they were both buried in Allen Teator Road Cemetery in Durham, Greene Co., NY.

        4339   iii   Phebe Hurlburt, born ca. 1787, probably in Chatham, CT,[47] supposedly married Simon Lobdell Jr.,[48] son of Simon and Grace (Pomeroy) Lobdell,[49] as his second wife. He was born on 18 Feb. 1786 in Rensselaer Co., NY.[50] They were living in Westerlo Town, Albany Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census,[51] the 1855 state census,[52] the 1860 federal census,[53] and the 1865 state census,[54] where he was a farmer. He supposedly died on 11 Apr. 1867,[55] and she supposedly died on 4 July 1867,[56] but their burial location is unknown.

        4340   vi   Sarah6 “Sally” Hurlburt, born on 23 Aug. 1788, probably in Chatham, CT,[57] married Peter Alberti/Alberty in ca. 1819. He was born on 13 July 1785 in Columbia, NY.[58] They were living in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[59] in Windham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[60] and in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY, in the 1840,[61] and 1850 federal census,[62] the 1855 state census,[63] and the 1860 federal census,[64] where he was a farmer. He died on 2 Oct. 1860 in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY, aged 75 years,[65] and she died on 23 Nov. 1866 in Prattsville, NY,[66] and they were both buried in Huntersfield Cemetery in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY.

        4341  vii   Lyman6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born on 15 Aug. 1793 in Durham, Greene Co., NY,[67] married Hannah Sutton, daughter of Giles Sutton, on 12 Feb. 1818.[68] She was born ca. 1798 in Colchester, Delaware Co., NY.[69] He died on 24 Apr. 1870 in Downsville, Colchester township, Delaware Co., NY, and she died in 1874 in Downsville, NY.[70] They were living in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[71] in Windham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[72] in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY, in the 1840 federal censuses, where he was in manufacturing and trade,[73] and in Colchester, Delaware Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer,[74] the 1855 state census, where he was a mason,[75] and the 1860 federal census, where he was a farmer.[76] They were living with their son Alston W. Hulbert in Colchester, NY, in the 1865 state census.[77] She died in 1868 in Colchester, NY,[78] and he died on 24 Apr. 1870 in Colchester, NY, aged 76 years,[79] and they were both buried in Paige Cemetery in Downsville, Delaware Co., NY.

        4342 viii   Benjamin6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born ca. 1795 in Greene Co., NY,[80] married Hannah S. Alberti/Alberty in 1819.[81] They were living in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820,[82] and 1830 federal censuses,[83] where he was a farmer, and in Conesville Town, Schoharie Co., NY, in the 1840,[84] and 1850 federal censuses,[85] and the 1855 state census,[86] and in Ashland, Greene Co., NY, in the 1860 federal census,[87] where he was a farmer. She died by 1865, but her burial location is unknown, and he was still living in Ashland, NY, in the 1865 state census.[88] No death or burial record was found for him.

Moses Stocking, second son of (518) Phebe5 Washburn, (136) Edward4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in CT on 12 June 1760,[89] married Elizabeth Pelton, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Penfield) Pelton,[90] on 17 Nov. 1785 in Chatham, CT.[91] She was born on 13 June 1762 in Chatham, CT.[92] On 31 Oct. 1785 and on 17 Sept. 1789 Benjamin Stocking, of Chatham, deeded land to his son, Moses Stocking.[93] He served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Joseph Churchill’s 8th Company, and was in the New York Campaign in 1776, and at Peekskill in 1777.[94] They were living in Chatham, Middlesex Co., CT, in the 1790 federal census,[95] and they moved to Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA, where he was living in the 1800,[96] 1810,[97] and 1820 federal censuses.[98] He died on 14 Aug. 1829, aged 69 years,[99] and was buried in Pioneer Burying Ground in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY. She died a widow on 10 Jan. 1849 in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA, aged 86 years, of “dropsey,”[100] and was buried in Sheffield Plain Cemetery in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA.

            Moses Stocking and Elizabeth Pelton had children:

        4345     i   Alexander Stocking, born on 24 Oct. 1786 in Chatham, CT,[101] died on 9 Sept. 1811, aged 24 years, and was buried in Sheffield Plain Cemetery in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA.[102]

        4346    ii   Phebe7 Stocking, born on 16 Mar. 1788 in Chatham, CT,[103] married Southmayd Stillman, of Erie Co., PA.[104] He was born on 24 Feb. 1786 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT.[105] They were living in Mendon, Ontario Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[106] and in Harbor Creek Township, Erie Co., PA, in the 1840,[107] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[108] She died on 25 Sept. 1857 in Berlin, Marathon Co., WI, aged 69 years, 5 months,[109] and he died on 15 June 1868 in Rosendale Center, Fond du Lac Co., WI, aged 82 years,[110] and they were both buried in Rosendale Cemetery in Rosendale, Fond du Lac Co., WI, but he was not found in the 1860 federal census in Wisconsin.

Reuben Stocking, youngest son of (518) Phebe5 Washburn, (136) Edward4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); baptized or born in Portland, CT, on 16 Feb. 1777,[112] married Elizabeth Rowley Isham, stepdaughter of Isaac Isham, of Colchester, CT,[113] on 17 May 1800.[114] She was born on 3 Jan. 1781.[115] He was living next door to his father in Chatham, CT, in the 1800 federal census.[116] On 10 Nov. 1802 Benjamin Stocking, of Chatham, deeded his homestead land to his son Reuben Stocking, in exchange for support for life.[117] They moved to New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY, in 1809, then to Monroe Co., NY, in 1819, and to Genesee Co., NY, in 1822.[118] Reuben Stocking was not a head of household in Chatham, CT, or in Genesee Co., NY, in the 1810 federal censuses, but he was probably living in Pittsford, Ontario Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[119] in Batavia, Genesee Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[120] and in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer.[121] She died on 25 Sept. 1839 in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI,[122] but her burial location is uncertain, and he died on 10 Aug. 1846 in Flowerfield, MI, aged 69 years, 4 months,[123] and was buried in Upper Flatbush Cemetery in Flowerfield Township, St. Joseph Co., MI.

        4348     i   Lucy7 Stocking, born on 11 June 1801 in Middletown, CT, married Henry “Harry” Spalding,[124] son of Hiram and Berthana (Holcomb) Spalding.[125] He was born on 6 June 1801 in VT.[126] They were living in Flowerfield Township, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1850,[127] and 1860 federal censuses,[128] where he was a farmer, and the 1870 federal census, where he was a retired farmer.[129] She died on 3 Jan. 1877 in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI, aged 75 years,[130] and he died on 25 Feb. 1877 in Flowerfield Township, MI,[131] and they were both buried in Upper Flatbush Cemetery in Flowerfield Township, St. Joseph Co., MI.

        4349    ii   Phebe Stocking, born on 8 Jan. 1803 in Middletown, CT,[132] died on 5 Mar. 1810 in New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY, aged 7 years, 1 month, 27 days,[133] and was buried in Scribner Cemetery in New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY.

        4350   iii   Philo7 Washburn Stocking, born on 10 Nov. 1804 in Middletown or Chatham, CT,[134] married Nancy J. G. Reynolds, of Wheeling, WV,[135] on 13 Feb. 1834.[136] She was born on 22 Nov. 1815 in Shippensburg, Franklin Co., PA.[137] He was in the jewelry business in Wheeling, and in the flour business in Sistersville, Tyler Co., WV, then had the good fortune to become one who took part in the discovery of oil in West Virginia, which brought him significant riches.[138] They were living in Wheeling, Ohio Co., VA, in the 1840 federal census,[139] in District 61, Tyler Co., VA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a merchant,[140] in Sistersville, Tyler Co., VA, in the 1860 federal census, where he was a miller,[141] in Lincoln Township, Tyler Co., WV, in the 1870 federal census, where he was farming,[142] and in Sistersville, Lincoln District, Tyler Co., WV, in the 1880 federal census, where he was a farmer.[143] He died on 30 Aug. 1882 in Tyler Co., WV, aged 77 years,[144] and she was still living in Sistersville, WV, in the 1900 federal census.[145] She died a widow on 10 Jan. 1901 in Sistersville, Tyler Co., WV, aged 85 years,[146] and they were both buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Sistersville, Tyler Co., WV.

        4351   iv   Fanny7 Stuart Stocking, born on 3 Jan. 1807 in Middletown, CT,[147] married Anson Torpy,[148] son of John and Polly (White) Torpy,[149] and they lived in Elba, Genesee Co., NY.[150] They were living in Elba, Genesee Co., NY, in the 1850,[151] 1860,[152] and 1870 federal censuses,[153] where he was a farmer. She died on 8 July 1873, aged 66 years,[154] presumably in Genesee Co., NY, and was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Elba, Genesee Co., NY. He remarried to Emily “Emma” Arnold.[155] She was born in 1849 in MI.[156] They were still living in Elba, NY, in the 1880 federal census.[157] He died on 2 Feb. 1890 in Elba, Genesee Co., NY, aged 88 years, 8 months,[158] and was buried with his first wife in Pine Hill Cemetery in Elba, NY. Emily (Arnold) Torpy died on 11 Mar. 1901 in Elba, NY, aged 52 years,[159] and was buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Elba, NY.

        4352    v   Benjamin Trumbell Stocking, born on 11 Nov. 1808 in Middletown, CT, died on 10 Aug. 1822,[160] but his burial location is unknown.

        4353   vi   Phebe7 Maria Stocking, born on 12 Feb. 1811, supposedly in Batavia, Genesee Co., NY,[161] married Dr. Stephen Porter Choate,[162] son of William and Mary Rebecca (Conkey) Choate Jr.[163] He was born on 21 Aug. 1808 in Orwell, Addison Co., VT,[164] and they lived in Three Rivers, MI.[165] She died on 16 Nov. 1845 in St. Joseph Co., MI, aged 34 years,[166] and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., MI. He remarried to Susan Ann Cole,[167] daughter of Ezra and Betsy (Maker) Cole.[168] She was born on 27 Apr. 1827 in NY.[169] They were living in Lockport, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census,[170] in Three Rivers Village, Lockport Township, MI, in the 1860 federal census,[171] and in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1870,[172] and 1880 federal census,[173] where he was a physician and surgeon. He died on 20 May 1893 in Three Rivers, MI, aged 84 years,[174] and she died on 2 Oct. 1906, aged 79 years,[175] and they were both buried in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, MI.

        4354  vii   Moses7 Stocking, born on 27 Apr. 1813 in New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY,[176] married Anna Loomis, daughter of Sylvester and Susannah (French) Loomis,[177] on 10 Sept. 1838.[178] She was born on 24 Nov. 1817 in NY.[179] They were living in Bucks, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1840 federal census,[180] and in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[181] In 1853 he sold the farm in Flowerfield, MI, and moved west to Iowa, then to Cass Co., NE, then to Denver, CO, then back to Saunders Co., NE.[182] He served in the Nebraska State Legislature, and the State Board of Agriculture, President of the Wool and Sheep Growers Association, and Vice President of the Fine Stock Breeders Association.[183] They were living in Plattsmouth, Cass Co., Nebraska Territory, in the 1860 federal census,[184] in Eldred, Township No. 14, Saunders Co., NE, in the 1870 federal census,[185] and in the Stockton Precinct, Saunders Co., NE, in the 1880 federal census,[186] where he was a farmer. He died on 1 Oct. 1881 on his farm near Wahoo, Saunders Co., NE,[187] and she died on 13 Feb. 1894 Wahoo, Saunders Co., NE,[188] and they were both buried in Sunrise Cemetery in Wahoo, Saunders Co., NE.

        4355 viii   John7 Isham Stocking, born on 27 May 1815 in Batavia, NY,[189] married 1.) Polly Wisner Clark on 15 Oct. 1845,[190] but she died on 15 Sept. 1851 in St. Joseph Co., MI, aged 39 years, 5 months, 4 days,[191] and was buried in Upper Flatbush Cemetery in Flowerfield Township, St. Joseph Co., MI. He remarried to 2.) Mrs. Fanny (Loomis) Brown, of Alexander, NY, on 18 Sept. 1852.[192] They were living in Flowerfield Township, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1850,[193] and 1860 federal censuses,[194] where he was a farmer, and near his brother Moses Stocking in Township 14, Saunders Co., NE, in the 1870 federal census,[195] and Stockton Precinct, Saunders Co., NE, in the 1880 federal census,[196] where he was a farmer. She supposedly died on 24 Oct. 1887 in Flowerfield, Perkins Co., MI,[197] and he supposedly died there on 2 Dec. 1889,[198] but their burial location is unknown.

        4356   ix   Rev. Daniel7 Nash Stocking, born on 5 Mar. 1817 in NY,[199] married Eleanor A. Gill,[200] supposedly daughter of William Gill, of St. Joseph Co., MI,[201] on 7 Mar. 1843.[202] She was born on 27 Apr. 1821 in NY.[203] They were living in Lee, Calhoun Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a clergyman,[204] in Flowerfield Township, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1860 federal census, where he was a farmer,[205] and in Yankee Springs, Barry Co., MI, in the 1870,[206] and 1880 federal censuses,[207] where he was a farmer. She died on 6 Sept. 1901 in Yankee Springs, MI, aged 80 years,[208] and he died on 3 May 1905 in Yankee Springs Township, Barry Co., MI, aged 88 years,[209] and they were both buried in Yankee Springs Cemetery in Hastings, Barry Co., MI.

        4357    x   Mary7 Stocking, born on 21 Jan. 1819 in NY,[210] married Edward Arnold Jr., son of Edward and Judith (Ellis) Arnold,[211] on 4 Sept. 1842 in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI.[212] He was born on 18 Mar. 1817 in Jefferson Co., NY.[213] They were living in Dowagiac Station, Pokagon Township, Cass Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer, and her sister Nancy Stocking was living with them.[214] She died on 28 Oct. 1856 in Glenwood, Mills Co., IA, aged 37 years, 10 months, 7 days,[215] and he died on 13 Nov. 1856 in Glenwood, IA, aged 39 years, 8 months, 5 days,[216] and they were both buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood, Mills Co., IA.

        4358   xi   Nancy Stocking, born on 2 June 1821 in NY, died young.[217]

        4359  xii   Reuben Stocking (Jr.), born on 3 Feb. 1823, died young.[218]

        4360 xiii   Nancy7 Ann Stocking, born on 7 Apr. 1824 in Genesee Co., NY,[219] was still unmarried and living with her sister and brother-in-law, Edward and Mary Arnold, in Dowagiac Station, Pokagon Township, Cass Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census,[220] married William Garrison,[221] apparently as his second wife, after 1860. He was born ca. 1819 in NY,[222] and they moved to Douglas Co., CO. They were living in Douglas Co., CO, in the 1870,[223] and 1880 federal censuses,[224] where he was a farmer. He died on 3 June 1891 in Castle Rock, Douglas Co., CO, aged 72 years,[225] and she died on 10 Oct. 1896 in Castle Rock, CO, aged 72 years,[226] and they were both buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock, Douglas Co., CO.
