Molly6 Benson, second daughter of (503) Elizabeth5 Washburn, (134) Ephraim4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Middleborough, MA, on 17 Apr. 1760,[1] married Jacob Shaw, son of Deacon George and Mercy (Thomas) Shaw (Jr.), of Middleborough,[2] on 18 June 1780 in Middleborough.[3] He was born on 20 Mar. 1760 in Middleborough,[4] a grand­son of George and Mercy (Rich) Shaw, and of Jedediah and Lois (Nelson) Thom­as, of Middleborough. They were living in Middleborough, MA, in the 1790 federal census,[5] and probably the 1810 federal census.[6] No death or probate records were found for either Jacob or Molly Shaw in Plymouth County.

            Molly Benson and Jacob Shaw had children:

        4125    ii   John Shaw, born on 14 Oct. 1782 in Middleborough,[8] marriage not found.

        4128    v   Jacob Shaw (Jr.), born on 17 July 1788 in Middleborough,[11] married Sybil Ward, of Middleborough, on 29 Nov. 1810 in Middleborough.[12] They were not found in the 1850 federal census in Plymouth County, or in the 1855 state census in Middleborough.

        4129   vi   Ebenezer Shaw, born on 28 Oct. 1793 in Middleborough,[13] marriage not found.[14]

        4130  vii   Freeman Shaw, born on 29 Aug. 1795 in Middleborough,[15] marriage not found.[16] He was not found in the 1850 federal census in Massachusetts or in the 1855 state census in Middleborough.

Samuel6 Benson, third son of (503) Elizabeth5 Washburn, (134) Ephraim4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Middleborough, MA, on 17 July 1762,[17] married Rebecca Hunt, daughter of the Baptist Rev. Asa and Rebecca (Hunt) Hunt, of Middleborough,[18] on 17 Nov. 1785 in Middleborough.[19] She was born on 10 Jan. 1767 in Dorchester, MA.[20] They were living in Middleborough, MA, in the 1790 federal census, next door to Manassah Washburn,[21] and they moved to Carmel, Penobscot Co., ME, by 1795. He probably died in Maine after 1830.[22]

            Samuel Benson and Rebecca Hunt had children:

        4131     i   Asa Hunt Benson, born on 9 Apr. 1786 in Middleborough,[23] marriage not found. He was not found in the 1850 federal census in Maine.

        4132    ii   Abishai7 Benson, born on 7 Aug. 1787 in Middleborough,[24] probably married Hannah Benson on 4 Mar. 1818 in Winthrop, Kennebec Co., ME.[25] He was not found in the 1850 federal census in Maine.

        4133   iii   William7 Benson, born on 14 July 1789 in Middleborough,[26] possibly married Louisa Ruby Johnson on 5 Nov. 1822 in Portland, ME.[27] They were not found in the 1850 federal census in Maine.

        4134   iv   Rebeckah7 Hunt Benson, born on 7 June 1791 in Middlebor­ough,[28] married John Benjamin[29] in ca. 1809 in Penobscot Co., ME.[30] They were not found in Penobscot Co., ME, in the 1850 federal census.

        4142  xii   John7 Benson, born on 2 Mar. 1809 in Carmel, ME,[44] possibly the John Benson, a Methodist Clergyman, who married Margery Nason on 24 Aug. 1834 in Portland, ME,[45] and was living in Dover, Piscataquis Co., ME, in the 1850 federal census,[46] or the John Benson, a physician, who married Achsa (___) in ca. 1838,[47] and was living in Newport, Penobscot Co., ME, in the 1850 federal census.[48]

Consider6 Benson (Jr.), fourth son of (503) Elizabeth5 Washburn, (134) Ephraim4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Middleborough, MA, on 4 Sept. 1764,[49] married Hannah Purrington, of Middleborough, on 21 Nov. 1787 in Middle­borough, MA.[50] She was born ca. 1768 in MA,[51] and they moved to New Salem, Hampshire [now Franklin] Co., MA, then to Chautauqua Co., NY, before 1840. In the 1790 federal census they were living in Middleborough, next door to his father,[52] they were living in New Salem, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1810 federal census,[53] and in New Salem, Franklin Co., MA, in the 1820.[54] and 1830 federal censuses.[55] By the 1840 federal census he was living in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY.[56] She died on 6 Oct. 1844 in Chautauqua Co., NY, aged 76 years,[57] and was buried in Knapp Cemetery in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY. He was living in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census,[58] and with his son Peleg Benson in Ellicott, NY, in the 1855 state census.[59] he supposedly died in Falconer, Chautauqua Co., NY, in 1855,[60] but his gravestone was not found in Pine Hill Cemetery in Falconer, NY.

            Consider Benson (Jr.) and Hannah Purrington supposedly had children:[61]

        4143     i   Dolly Benson, born in 1788 in New Salem, MA.[62] marriage not found.

        4144    ii   Betsy7 Purrington Benson, born in 1790 or on 23 Dec. 1791 in New Salem,[63] married Simeon Chapin Davis,[64] son of Rev. Paul C. and Rachel (Chapin) Davis, as his second wife, on 26 Sept. 1822 in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY.[65] He was born on 15 Oct. 1788 in Wardsboro, Windham Co., VT,[66] and had married first to Lydia Tobey on 11 Aug. 1814 in Goshen, VT,[67] and they moved to Chautauqua Co., NY, where she died on 29 Dec. 1821.[68] Simeon Chapin Davis died on 12 May 1836 in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY, aged 47 years,[69] and Betsy Purrington (Benson) Davis died on 25 Dec. 1875 in Kiantone, Chautauqua Co., NY.[70] They supposedly had four children:[71]

a. Lydia Almira Davis, born on 3 Nov. 1823 in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY, supposedly died on 6 Oct. 1870.[72]

b. Susan Pamelia Davis, born on 1 Feb. 1826 in Carroll, NY, supposedly died on 10 Apr. 1900.[73]

c. Gilbert Lafayette Davis, born on 14 June 1828 in Carroll, NY.[74]

d. Josiah H. Davis, born on 2 July 1832 in Kiantone, Chautauqua Co., NY,[75] supposedly died on 21 Mar. 1902 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY.[76]

        4145   iii   Peleg7 Benson, born on 3 Mar. 1793 in New Salem,[77] married Hannah8 M. Washburn, daughter of (2691) William7 and Huldah (Clark) Washburn, of Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in ca. 1828, probably in Chautauqua Co., NY. She was born in 1804,[78] a granddaughter of (1041) Elisha6 and Charity (Snell) Washburn, of Wendell, MA. They were living in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census, near his brother Saxton Benson and his father-in-law, William Washburn,[79] in Randolph, Cattaraugus Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census, near his brother-in-law Erastus Washburn,[80] and in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer, and his father Consider Benson and father-in-law William Washburn were living with them,[81] in the 1855 state census,[82] the 1860 federal census,[83] and the 1865 state census,[84] where he was a farmer. He died in 1870 in Falconer, Chautauqua Co., NY,[85] but no probate records were filed for his estate in Chautauqua Co., NY, and she died in 1873 in Falconer, NY,[86] and they were both buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Falconer, Chautauqua Co., NY. (See her family for their children.)

        4146   iv   Hiram Benson, born on 7 July 1800 in New Salem,[87] supposedly died in 1869 in Carey Station, IL.[88]

        4147    v   Judith7 Benson, born on 27 June 1801 in New Salem,[89] married Erastus8 Washburn, son of (2691) William7 and Huldah (Clark) Washburn, of Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in ca. 1824.[90] He was born ca. 1798 in MA,[91] a grandson of (1041) Elisha6 and Charity (Snell) Washburn, of Wendell, MA. They were living in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[92] in Randolph, Cattaraugus Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census, near his brother-in-law Peleg Benson,[93] and in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer,[94] but they were not found in the 1855 state census, or the 1860 federal census, and no land records were found for Erastus Washburn in Chautauqua Co., NY. She died before 1859, and he remarried to Sabra A. (___), a widow, before 1859. She was born ca. 1805 in Chenango Co., NY.[95] On 18 Feb. 1859 Sabra A. Washburn, of the Village of Jamestown, Town of Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, purchased from Horace Allen and Fanny, his wife, a tract of land on Allen Street in Jamestown for $450.[96] They were living in Jamestown Village, Town of Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1865 state census.[97] He died on 3 Sept. 1867 in Chautauqua Co., NY,[98] and was buried in Knapp Cemetery in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY, but no probate records were filed for his estate in Chautauqua Co., NY. She died a widow, testate, in 1875 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, her will dated 24 Dec. 1866, and probated on 29 Dec. 1875, mentioned only her two daughters Amanda M. Porter, wife of William Porter, and S. Jane Randall, wife of Edward Randall.[99] (See his family for their children.)

        4148   vi   Susan Benson, born on 3 Apr. 1803 in New Salem,[100] supposedly died in 1873 in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY.[101]

        4149  vii   Saxton7 Benson, born in ca. 1805 in New Salem,[102] married Loana/Luania8 Washburn, daughter of (2691) William7 and Huldah (Clark) Washburn, of Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in ca. 1826. She was born in 1807 in MA,[103] a granddaughter of (1041) Elisha6 and Charity (Snell) Washburn, of Wendell, MA. They were living in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census, near his brother Peleg Benson and his father-in-law, William Washburn.[104] They were living in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a laborer.[105] He apparently died by 1855, but no probate records were filed for his estate in Chautauqua Co., NY, and she was a widow living in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1855 state census with her children,[106] but she was not found in the 1860 or 1870 federal censuses. She was a widow living with her widowed daughter Susan Merriam in Ellicott, NY, in the 1875 state census,[107] and the 1880 federal census.[108] She died in 1887 in Chautauqua Co., NY,[109] and was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Falconer, Chautauqua Co., NY. (1611.) John6 Benson, sixth son of (503) Elizabeth5 Washburn, (134) Ephraim4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Middleborough, MA, on 20 Oct. 1773,[110] married 1.) Abi­gail “Nabby” Leonard, of Carver, daughter of Joseph and Ruth (White) Leonard, of Middleborough,[111] on 5 Oct. 1796 in Carver.[112] She was born on 2 Mar. 1770 in Middleborough,[113] and died on 6 Apr. 1801 in Middleborough, aged 31 years, 1 month, 3 days.[114] He remarried to 2.) Mercy Stevens, of Wareham, on 6 Apr. 1802 in Wareham.[115] She was born ca. 1769 in MA,[116] and died on 24 Aug. 1822 in Middle­borough, aged 53 years,[117] and was buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough, MA.

            John Benson died testate on 18 June 1848 in Middleborough, aged 74 years,[118] and was also buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough. His will dated 21 Feb. 1846, and probated in Aug. 1848, mentioned only his daughter Mercy Benson, and son Stillman Benson, and he named his son Stillman Benson as executor of his estate.[119] (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.)

            John Benson had two children by Abigail Leonard, and probably four more children by Mercy Stevens:

        4150     i   Lucy Benson, born on 29 Sept. 1797 in Middleborough,[120] died unmarried on 18 Apr. 1820 in Middleborough, aged 22 years,[121] and was buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough.

        4151    ii   Peleg Benson, born on 9 Mar. 1799 in Middleborough,[122] died on 8 June 1817 in Middleborough, aged 18 years, 3 months,[123] and was buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough.

        4152   iii   Eliza Benson, born on 5 Dec. 1803 in Middleborough,[124] died unmarried on 11 July 1834 in Middleborough, aged 29 years,[125] and was buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough.

        4153   iv   Stillman7 Benson, born on 6 Jan. 1806 in Middleborough,[126] married Angeline Harrison Smith,[127] daughter of Ebenezer and Lydia (Shurtleff) Smith, of Middleborough,[128] on 1 Sept. 1831 in Middle­borough.[129] She was born on 10 Feb. 1808 in Middleborough,[130] a granddaughter of Peter and Rebecca (Holmes) Shurtleff.[131] He had a lumber mill in South Middleborough, MA. He was executor of his father’s estate in 1848, and he was appointed as the guardian of David M., Sylvia, and Abiram Bates, children of David and (4041) Lydia (Atwood) Bates, of Carver, on 4 May 1852.[132] They were living in Wareham, MA, in the 1850 federal census,[133] where he owned a boarding house, and in Middleborough, MA, in the 1855 state census, where he was a mill agent,[134] in the 1860 federal census, where he was a master teamster,[135] and the 1865 state census­es, where he was a manufacturer.[136] He died on 9 July 1883 in Middleborough, aged 77 years, 6 months, 3 days,[137] and was buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough. They had children:

a. Maria8 Perkins Benson, born on 29 Aug. 1832 in Middleborough,[138] married Capt. James Monson Clark, of Rochester,[139] son of John and Eleanor (Handy) Clark,[140] as his second wife, on 24 Mar. 1852 in Boston.[141] He was born on 10 Jan. 1820 in Rochester, MA,[142] and had married first to Susanna M. Bates, daughter of Noble and Sarah (Allen) Bates,[143] in 1846,[144] but she died on 13 July 1849 in Rochester, MA, aged 30 years, 10 months,[145] and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Marion, Plymouth Co., MA. Capt. James Monson Clark died on 17 May 1897 in Mattapoisett, Plymouth Co., MA, aged 77 years,[146] and Maria Perkins (Benson) Clark died a widow on 20 July 1913 in Middleborough, MA, aged 80 years,[147] and they were both buried in Cushing Cemetery in Mattapoisett, Plymouth Co., MA.

b. John8 Stevens Benson, born on 5 Sept. 1834 in Middleborough,[148] married Mary Anna Loring, daughter of Capt. David Hawes and Lydia F. (Ryder) Loring,[149] on 20 Oct. 1855 in Middleborough.[150] She was born on 1 Aug. 1837 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA,[151] and they were living in Middleborough with his father in the 1860 federal census, where he was a box maker,[152] and in the 1865 state census, where he was a farmer.[153] She died on 11 Aug. 1912 in Middleborough, aged 75 years,[154] and he died on 16 June 1917 in Middleborough, aged 82 years,[155] and they were both buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough, MA.

c. Elizabeth8 Mann Benson, born on 5 Apr. 1836 in Middleborough,[156] married Josiah Harris Vaughan,[157] son of David A. Vaughan, on 10 Apr. 1856 in Middleborough.[158] He was born on 7 June 1827.[159] They were living with her parents in Middleborough in the 1865 state census, where he was a farmer.[160] He died on 28 Apr. 1897 in Middleborough, aged 69 years,[161] and she died on 15 Apr. 1915 in Middleborough, aged 79 years,[162] and they were both buried in Vaughan Cemetery in Middleborough, MA.

        4154    v   Mercy7 Benson, born on 3 July 1809 in Middleborough,[163] possibly never married. She was still unmarried in 1846 when her father wrote his will, and was living with her brother, Stillman Benson, in Middleborough in the 1850 federal census,[164] the 1855 state census,[165] and the 1860 federal census.[166] She died on 11 Jan. 1865 in Middleborough, aged 56 years,[167] and was buried in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough.

        4155   vi   Andrew Benson, died on 9 Jan. 1817 in Middleborough,[168] marriage not found. He was not found in the 1855 or 1865 state census in Middleborough, and he probably also died before 1846 because he was not mentioned in his father’s will, but his gravestone was not found in South Middleboro Cemetery in Middleborough, MA.

[A] The Will of John Benson of Middleborough, Plymouth County, Commonwealth of Massachusetts (1846) *

                In the name of God Amen  I John Benson of Middleborough in the County of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Yeoman, being in good health, of sound mind and perfect memory, do this twenty-first day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and forty six, make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner following to wit.

First I give and bequeath to my daughter Mercy Benson all my Household Furniture and indoor moveables with I may leave at my decease to her own use and behoof forever, I do also give her the use and improvement of the East room on the lower floor, of my dwelling house, and the bedroom which opens out of the kitchen, so long as she remains single. It is also my Will and I hereby order that my son Stillman Benson shall take my said daughter Mercy Benson to board with him in and as one of his own family, and see that she is well provided for in sickness and health – And that he shall further give her Eight dollars a year to enable her to procure such things as she most wants untill her marriage day. But in case of her marriage she from that time relinquishes all right in the house hold and provisions as well as the Eight dollars per year

  I give to my said son Stillman Benson all and singular the rest and residue of my Estate both Real and Personal, or mixd which I may leave at my decease wheresoever the same may be found, and also the reversion of that part of my dwelling house which is above temporarily given to my daughter.

And lastly I do constitute and appoint my said son Stillman Benson sole Executor to this my last Will and testament, hereby directing him spedily to pay all my Just debts and funeral charges
