Families of the Children of Abigail5 Washburn and John Lindsey

The families of the children of Abigail Washburn and John Lindsey are very much incomplete and I have not been able to find much reliable information about most of them, so this file will be added to as new information is discovered on these families. I have not found the parents of John Lindsey. The children of John and Abigail Lindsey evidently moved away from Stafford, CT, probably to either western Massachusetts or New York, except for daughter Sarah, who married Levi Drake.

(1172.) Abigail Lindsey, eldest daughter of (409) Abigail5 Washburn, (122) Samuel4 (Jr.), (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Stafford, CT, on 27 Nov. 1736,[1] married Ebenezer Cross, son of Jonathan and Lydia (Hall) Cross, of Mansfield, Tolland Co., CT,[2] on 24 Nov. 1757 in Stafford.[3] He was born on 7 Apr. 1735 in Mansfield, Windham Co., CT,[4] a grandson of Stephen and Mary (Fuller) Cross, of Mansfield, CT.[5] They were admitted to the First Congregational Church in Stafford on 14 Nov. 1773, and had five of their children baptized there on 5 Dec. 1773.[6] He was not a head of household in Connecticut in the 1790 federal census, he was probably living in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1800,[7] and 1810 federal censuses.[8] Ebenezer Cross supposedly died in Nov. 1815 in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY,[9] but no probate records were filed for his estate in Otsego Co., NY.

Abigail Lindsey and Ebenezer Cross had children, order uncertain:

2883     i   Silas Cross, born on 24 Mar. ca. 1758 in Stafford, CT,[10] possibly died young, not baptized with his brothers and sisters in 1773.

2883a   ii   Lydia Cross, a daughter, born on 18 Nov. 1759 in Stafford, CT.[11] probably died young, not baptized with her brothers and sisters in 1773, and they gave the name Lydia to another child in 1782.

2883b iii   Abigail Cross, born on 22 Aug. 1761 in Stafford, CT,[12] possibly died young, not baptized with her brothers and sisters in 1773.

2884   iv   Ebenezer Cross (Jr.), born on 19 Sept. 1763 in Stafford, CT,[13] baptized on 5 Dec. 1773 in Stafford,[14] supposedly married 1.) (____), and 2.) Elisabeth French, who was born on 21 Oct. 1784.[15] He was not a head of household in Connecticut in the 1790 federal census, but he was probably living in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, next door to his father in the 1800,[16] and 1810 federal censuses,[17] and the Ebenezer Cross living in Hanover, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer, but his wife does not appear among the members of his household,[18] and 1830 federal census,[19] however there is also an Ebenezer Cross household back in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, with a male in his age bracket as the head of household.[20] Ebenezer Cross (Jr.) died testate in ca. Nov. 1839 in Hanover, Chautauqua Co., NY,[21] and was buried in Balltown Cemetery in Balltown, Chautauqua Co., NY. His will, dated 25 Sept. 1839, and presented for probate on 29 Nov. 1839, mentioned his wife Elizabeth Cross, sons Levi and Ebenezer, daughters Abigail, Susan and Sarah, sons Aaron, Daniel and Hiram, and daughters Claricey, Jane and Elizabeth, and he named his son Levi Cross and Laertes Sollace as executors of his estate, but they both renounced the trust, and his son Ebenezer Cross Jr. was granted administration of his estate with the will annexed on 23 Jan. 1840.[22] (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.) Elizabeth (French) Cross was still living in Hanover, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census.[23] She supposedly died on 21 Oct. 1852 in McConnell, Stephenson Co., IL, aged 68 years,[24] and was buried in Silent Hill Cemetery in McConnell, Stephenson Co., IL. He probably had 6 children by his unknown first wife, and 6 more children by Elisabeth French.[25]

2885    v   Isaac Cross, born on 16 Oct. 1765 in Stafford, CT,[26] baptized on 5 Dec. 1773 in Stafford.[27] He was not a head of household in Connecticut in the 1790 federal census, but he was apparently married and living near his father in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1800 federal census.[28] He was possibly one of the “J. Cross” households living near his father in Cherry Valley in the 1810 federal census,[29] but he was not found in the 1820 or 1830 federal censuses.

2886   vi   James Cross, born on 24 Mar. ca. 1768 in Stafford, CT,[30] baptized as “Jairus” on 5 Dec. 1773 in Stafford,[31] possibly one of the three different J. Cross households living near his father in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census, but he does not appear to be the James Cross living in Cherry Valley, NY, in the 1820 federal census,[32] nor in the 1830 or 1840 federal censuses.

2887  vii   Sybil Cross, born on 1 May ca. 1770 in Stafford, CT,[33] baptized as “Sibyl” on 5 Dec. 1773 in Stafford.[34]

2888 viii   Hannah Cross, born on 12 or 24 July ca. 1772 in Stafford, CT,[35] baptized on 5 Dec. 1773 in Stafford.[36]

2889   ix   John Cross, born on 13 Jan. 1775 in Stafford, CT,[37] baptized on 19 Feb. 1775 in Stafford,[38] was apparently married and living next door to his father in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1800 federal census,[39] probably one of the three different J. Cross households living near his father in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census,[40] and was probably still living in Cherry Valley, NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[41] and the 1830 federal census,[42] but he was not a head of household in Cherry Valley, NY, in the 1840 or 1850 federal censuses.

        2890    x   Sarah Cross, born on 12 Jan. 1777 in Stafford, CT,[43] baptized on 2 Mar. 1777 in Stafford.[44]

2891   xi   Jonathan Cross, born on 9 Sept. 1780 in Stafford, CT,[45] baptized on 12 Nov. 1780 in Stafford,[46] possibly one of the J. Cross households living near his father in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census,[47] and he was still living in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[48] but he was not a head of household in Cherry Valley, NY, in the 1830 or 1840 federal censuses.

2892  xii   Lydia Cross, born on 25 Oct. 1782 in Stafford, CT,[49] baptized on 29 Dec. 1782 in Stafford.[50]

Mary Lindsey and Abel Cross had children:

2893     i   Abel Cross (Jr.), born on 17 Oct. 1762 in Stafford, CT,[58] married Desire Palmer.[59] He was not one of the heirs of Abel Cross to sign the 1796 agreement to allow Jeduthan Cross to administer his father’s estate, and he may have already moved to New York by then. He was probably married and living in Cambridge, Washington Co., NY, in the 1800 federal census,[60] but he was not found in the 1810 federal census. He living in Rutland, Jefferson Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[61] next door to his brother Abishai Cross, and he died on 5 Feb. 1822 in Rutland, NY, aged 59 years,[62] and was buried in Glass Road Cemetery in Rutland, Jefferson Co., NY. Presented for probate on 29 Nov. 1739 by Ebenezer Cross Junior a creditor and next of kin of Ebenezer Cross late of Hanover, Stephen R. Hale was appointed as special guardian for Sarah Cross, Louisa Cross, Elisha Cross, minor heirs of Ebenezer Cross deceased, who resided in Cattaraugus County. A citation was issued to Levi Henly or Handy and Sarah his wife, Stephen R. Hall and Abigail his wife, Levi Cross and George Henly or Handy and Susan his wife to appear, and the will was proved on 7 Jan. 1840 by John Tousay of Perrysburgh, who testified that Levi was the oldest, the children of his first wife to have five dollars apiece except Levi, the three youngest sons to have thirty dollars apiece, and the three youngest daughters to have twenty five dollars apiece, they being by his present wife. Laertes Sollace and Hiram Wheeler also testified. Levi Cross and Laertes Sollace, the Executors, both renounced their right and claim as executors on 11 Jan. 1740.

Ebenezer Cross was granted administration of the estate of Ebenezer Cross deceased with the will annexed on 23 Jan. 1840.

* Transcribed by John A. Maltby from Chautauqua County Wills Vol. 1, p. 290-298, from FHL microfilm #0588096, and Letters Testamentary Vol. 1, p. 99. Note, the handwriting in the Chautauqua County probate proceedings in Vol. 1, p. 291-298 is very difficult to read, so the surnames of the husbands of Sarah Cross and Susan Cross are uncertain. I assume that Sarah, Louisa and Elisha Cross, the minor heirs of Ebenezer Cross, must have been grandchildren by an unmentioned deceased son.
