Family of the Child of Joanna4 Washburn and Ebenezer3 Leach

 

 

         Joanna Washburn and Ebenezer Leach only had one son who lived in Bridgewater and left descendants, Deacon Daniel Leach. One daughter of Daniel moved up to Westmoreland, New Hampshire, and another moved to Wilmington, Delaware, and then to Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The other children remained in the Bridgewater area. This will be the last installment for this branch of the Washburn family.

Deacon Daniel5 Leach, only son of (353) Joanna5 Washburn, (106) Josiah4, (56) John3 (6th), (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 9 Dec. 1735,[1] married Bethiah4 Keith, daughter of Samuel3 and Hannah (Ames) Keith (Jr.),[2] on 31 Jan. 1760 in Bridgewater.[3] She was born on 24 Oct. 1736 in Bridge­water,[4] a grand­daughter of Samuel2 and Bethiah3 (Fobes) Keith, and of William and Mary (Hayward) Ames, of Bridgewater.[5] They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census.[6]

         Deacon Daniel Leach died testate on 19 Apr. 1800 in Bridgewater, aged 64 years.[7] His will was dated 9 Jan. 1800, and probated on 22 May 1800. He mentioned his wife Bethia Leach, married daughters Joanna Wilbor, Deborah White, and Olive Fobes, “my other daughters” Bethia, Lydia, Susanna and Sela Leach, and son, Ebenezer Leach, whom he appointed as executor of his estate. Witnesses were Joseph Leach, Ephraim Leach, and Jonathan Crane.[8] (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.) Bethiah (Keith) Leach died a widow on 14 Jan. 1826 in Bridgewater, aged 89 years.[9]

         Deacon Daniel Leach and Bethiah Keith had children:

        2407     i   Joanna6 Leach, born on 20 Feb. 1761 in Bridgewater,[10] mar­ried Deacon Isaac Wilbar, of Bridgewater, son of George and Lydia (Shelly) Wilbar/Wilbur, of Raynham, MA,[11] as his second wife, on 16 June 1791 in Middlebor­ough.[12] He was born on 14 May 1759 in Raynham,[13] and had married first to (1430) Susanna Leach, possibly daughter of Solomon4 and (463) Hannah4 (Leach) Leach,[14] in 1781,[15] by whom he had 4 children. On 18 Sept. 1805 Isaac Wilbar and Solomon Alden, Jr., Gentleman, both of Bridgewater, and Simon Backus, of Middleborough, were appointed to divide the estate of Zadock Leach, of Bridgewater.[16] Deacon Isaac Wilbur died testate on 19 Feb. 1834 in Titicut, aged 74 years,[17] his will dated 5 Sept. 1827, and probated on 1 Apr. 1834, mentioned his wife Joanna, son Aberdeen Wilbar, three married daughters: Lurana Fobes, Ruth Keith, and Lydia Wilbar, three youngest daughters, who were unmarried: Susannah, Olive, and Anna, and son Isaac Wilbar Jr., and he named his son Isaac as executor of his estate.[18] (See Appendix [B] for a full transcription of his will.) Joanna (Leach) Wilbar died on 17 Oct. 1841 in Titicut, aged 80 years,[19] and they were both buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA. Joanna (Leach) Wilbar had children:

a. Susanna Wilbar, born on 10 Apr. 1792 in Bridgewater,[20] was still unmarried in 1827 when her father wrote his will and in 1831 when her uncle Ebenezer Leach wrote his will, married Seth Gushee (Jr.), of Raynham, son of Seth and Ruth (Dean) Gushee,[21] on 23 Apr. 1841 in Bridgewater,[22] but she died on 17 Apr. 1843 in Raynham, aged 51 years, of epilepsy.[23] He died a widower on 23 Oct. 1864 in Raynham, aged 86 years, 10 months, 14 days.[24]

b. Isaac Wilbar (Jr.), born on 13 Oct. 1794 in Bridgewater,[25] he was executor of his father’s estate in 1834, married Stella Fobes, daughter of Bela and (3295) Alice7 (Washburn) Fobes,[26] on 3 Nov. 1842 in Bridgewater.[27] She was born on 11 Mar. 1813 in Bridgewater,[28] a granddaughter of Robert and Abiah (Knapp) Fobes, of Bridgewater,[29] and of (1296) Benjamin6 and Alice (Shaw) Washburn, of Middleborough. They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[30] He died testate on 4 June 1854 in Bridgewater,[31] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, his will dated 31 May 1854, and probated in July 1854, mentioned his three daughters Elizabeth, Alice Antoinette, and Emily Jane, and his wife Stella, whom he named as executrix of his estate.[32] (See Appendix [C] for a full transcription of his will.) She was a widow living in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census, next door to her sister, Caroline Wilbar,[33] and she remarried to Joshua Padelford (Jr.), of Providence, RI, son of Joshua and Huldah (Richmond) Padelford,[34] and widower of her sister Sybil Fobes, as his second wife, on 9 Feb. 1860 in Middleborough, MA.[35] They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1860 federal census, with her children by Isaac Wilbar and her sister-in-law Olive Wilbar,[36] the 1865 state census,[37] and the 1870 federal census,[38] where he was a farmer. No death record was found for him in Massachusetts, but Stella (Fobes) (Wilbar) Padelford died a widow on 30 Nov. 1893 in Bridgewater, aged 80 years, 10 months, of influenza fever,[39] and was also buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater.

c. Olive Wilbar, born on 1 Mar. 1796 in Bridgewater,[40] never married. She was still unmarried in 1827 when her father wrote his will and in 1831 when her uncle Ebenezer Leach wrote his will. She was not found in the 1850 federal census, but she was living with the family of Joshua and Stella (Fobes) (Wilbar) Padelford in Bridgewater in the 1860 federal census,[41] and the 1865 state census. She died testate on 13 June 1868 in Bridgewater, aged 72 years, 2 months, of “dropsy,”[42] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, her will dated 8 July 1864, and probated on 13 July 1868, mentioned her sister Anna Ford, her niece Louisa H. Wilbar, her sister Lydia Wilbar, her niece Mary Elizabeth, daughter of her late brother Isaac Wilbar, her niece Alice Antoinette, daughter of her late brother Isaac Wilbar, her niece Emily Jane, daughter of her late brother Isaac Wilbar, Louisa, wife of her nephew George S. Wilbar, George Sanderson Wilbar, his brother Oliver Cromwell Wilbar, Isaac Sanford Wilbar, her late sister Lurana’s children, and her late brother Aberdene’s children, and she named her cousin Daniel L. Hayward as executor of her estate.[43] (See Appendix [D] for a full transcription of her will.)

d. Anna Wilbar, born on 25 Sept. 1800 in Bridgewater,[44] was still unmarried in 1827 when her father wrote his will and in 1831 when her uncle Ebenezer Leach wrote his will, married David Ford (Jr.), of North Bridgewater, son of David and Olive (Packard) Ford,[45] as his second wife, on 20 Oct. 1836 in Bridgewater.[46] He was born on 9 May 1797 in North Bridgewater,[47] and his first wife, Polly (Wild) Ford, had died on 5 Jan. 1836 in North Bridgewater, aged 38 years.[48] They were living in North Bridgewater, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a shoe manufacturer.[49] He died intestate, however, on 10 Sept. 1850 in North Bridgewater, aged 53 years, 4 months, 1 day, of dysentery,[50] and his widow Anna Ford, of North Bridgewater, declined the administration of his estate, and asked that Henry A. Ford be granted the administration, which was approved on 1 Oct. 1850.[51] She was still living in North Bridgewater in the 1860 federal census, where the family of David and Elisabeth Packard was living with her.[52] She died a widow, testate, on 2 Apr. 1873 in North Bridgewater, aged 72 years, 7 months, of “dropsy,”[53] her will dated 15 Mar. 1873, and probated on 12 May 1873, mentioned her niece Betsey P. Dunbar, and her step-son Henry A. Ford, of North Bridgewater, and she named Jonas R. Perkins, of North Bridgewater, as executor of her estate.[54] (See Appendix [E] for a full transcription of her will.)

        2408    ii   Bethiah Leach, born on 24 Nov. 1762 in Bridgewater,[55] died on 5 Sept. 1763 in Bridgewater.[56]

        2409   iii   Bethiah6 Leach, born on 2 June 1764 in Bridgewater,[57] never married. She was still unmarried in 1831 when her brother Ebenezer Leach wrote his will, and she was living with her sisters Lydia Leach and Susannah Hooper in Bridgewater next door to her nephew and niece, Daniel L. and Hannah Hayward, in the 1850 federal census.[58] She died on 19 Sept. 1854 in Bridgewater, aged 90 years, “caused by broken limb,”[59] but no probate records were filed for her estate.

        2410   iv   Deborah6 “Debby” Leach, born on 19 Aug. 1766 in Bridgewater,[60] married Perez White, of Raynham, MA, son of Samuel and Hannah (Andrew) White, of Taunton,[61] on 1 Jan. 1788 in Middleborough.[62] They were living in Raynham, MA, in the 1790,[63] 1800,[64] and 1810 federal censuses,[65] and in Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[66] and in the 1830,[67] and 1840 federal censuses.[68] Sister Deborah White was mentioned in the 1831 will of her brother Ebenezer Leach. She died on 12 Feb. 1844 in Westmoreland, NH, aged 77 years,[69] and he died on 4 June 1850 in Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH,[70] and they were both buried in Pratt Cemetery in Westmoreland, NH. They had children:

a. Deborah S. White, born ca. 1789, was still unmarried in 1831 when her uncle Ebenezer Leach wrote his will, marriage not found.

b. Sybil White, born on 24 June 1791,[71] died on 1 Jan. 1793 in Raynham, aged 18 months, 8 days.[72]

c. Sidney White, born on 13 Mar. 1794 in Raynham,[73] married Betsey Tillson, daughter of Capt. Nehemiah and Abigail (Morse) Tillson, of Wrentham,[74] on 25 Jan. 1818 in Wrentham, MA.[75] She was born on 20 Feb. 1793 in Foxborough, MA,[76] and they were living in Westmoreland, NH, in the 1820 federal census,[77] and in Coventry, Orleans Co., VT, in the 1830,[78] 1840,[79] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was farmer.[80] She died on 11 May 1858 in Coventry, VT, aged 65 years, buried in Village Cemetery,[81] and he was living with the family of Samuel and Mary Kendall in Coventry, VT, in the 1860 federal census.[82] He may have remarried, because a Mary White, aged 72, was living with him in Coventry, VT, in the 1870 federal census.[83] No death record was found for him in Vermont.

d. Sybil White, born on 30 Jan. 1797 in Raynham,[84] married Benjamin Tillson, of Wrentham, MA, son of Capt. Nehemiah and Abigail (Morse) Tillson,[85] on 22 Sept. 1822 in Westmoreland, NH.[86] He was born on 8 Sept. 1796 in Wrentham.[87] She was called Sybil Tilson in the 1831 will of her uncle Ebenezer Leach. They were living in Coventry, Orleans Co., VT, in the 1830,[88] and 1840 federal censuses, where he was a farmer,[89] and in Wrentham, Norfolk Co., MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[90] He died on 25 Nov. 1856 in Wrentham, MA, aged 60 years, of “intemperance,”[91] and she was still living in Wrentham, MA, in the 1860,[92] and 1870 federal censuses.[93] She died a widow on 30 Apr. 1876 in Wrentham, aged 79 years,[94] and they were both buried in Wrentham Center Cemetery in Wrentham.

e. Daniel White, born on 19 Jan. 1799 in Raynham,[95] died on 7 June 1808 in Raynham, aged 9 years.[96]

f. Isaac Keith White, born on 29 Aug. 1801 in Raynham,[97] married Penelope Knight, daughter of Artemas and Kezia (White) Knight,[98] on 2 Jan. 1825 in Westmoreland, NH.[99] She was born on 9 Sept. 1802.[100] They were probably living with his father in Westmoreland, NH, in the 1830, and 1840 federal censuses, and they were still living in Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1850,[101] 1860,[102] and 1870 federal censuses,[103] where he was a farmer. She died on 10 Sept. 1874 in Westmoreland, NH, aged 72 years, 1 day,[104] and he died a widower on 9 July 1881 in Westmoreland, NH, aged 79 years, 10 months, 10 days, of “consumption,”[105] and they were both buried in South Village Cemetery in Westmoreland, NH.

g. Samuel Davis White, born on 24 Oct. 1804 in Raynham,[106] marriage not found.

        2411    v   Ebenezer6 Leach, born on 16 Sept. 1768 in Bridgewater,[107] married Eunice4 Keith, daughter of Benjamin3 and Abigail5 (Leach) Keith, of Bridgewater, on 20 Feb. 1794 in Middleborough.[108] She was born ca. 1770,[109] a grand­daugh­ter of Samuel2 and Bethiah3 (Fobes) Keith, and of Nehemiah4 and Mercy (Staples) Leach, of Bridgewater.[110] He was executor of his father’s estate in 1800. Ebenezer Leach died tes­tate on 21 Sept. 1834 in Titicut, aged 66 years,[111] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, his will dated 14 Dec. 1831, and probated on 21 Jan. 1835, mentioned his wife Eunice Leach, Rev. Philip Colby of Middleborough, his sister Susannah Hooper of Bridgewater, his natural sisters Susannah Wilbar, Bethiah Leach, Lydia Leach, Sela Hayward, and Deborah White; Daniel Hayward, Ebenezer P. Hayward and Ariston M. Hayward, children of his sister Sela Hayward; Ruth Fobes, Olive Williams, Daniel L. Fobes, and Azariah K. Fobes, children of his sister Olive Fobes, now deceased; Deborah S. White and Cybil Tilson, children of his aforesaid sister White; Susan Wilbar, Olive Wilbar, and Anna Wilbar, children of his aforesaid sister Wilbar; and Hannah Hayward and Susannah Fobes, children of his deceased sister Fobes, and he named Zepha­niah Fobes, of Bridgewater, Gentleman, as executor of his estate.[112] (See Appendix [F] for a full transcription of his will.) Eunice (Keith) Leach died tes­tate on 31 Jan. 1842 in Titicut, aged 71 years,[113] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, her will dated 11 Dec. 1841, and probated in Mar. 1842, mentioned Abagail Dunbar, Bethia Staples, and Eunice Bassett, the three daughters of her late sister Bethiah Bassett, William L. Richmond, Edwin A. Richmond, Samuel W. Richmond, and Homer B. Richmond, children of her late niece Sophronia Richmond, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Daniel Hayward and Austin M. Hayward, sons of Elisha Hayward, and Nathan B. Dunbar of Bridgewater, Mason, and his wife Betsey H. Dunbar, and she named Isaac Fobes, of Bridgewater, Esquire, as executor of her es­tate.[114] (See Appendix [G] for a full transcription of her will.) They had one son who died in infancy:

a. Unite Leach, a son, born ca. Sept. 1794, died on 25 Dec. 1794 in Bridgewater, in his 4th month,[115] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater.

        2412   vi   Daniel6 Leach (Jr.), born on 9 Jan. 1771 in Bridgewater,[116] married Olive Hay­ward, probably daughter of Robert5 and (1331) Hannah4 (Keith) Hayward, of Bridgewater,[117] on 29 Oct. 1794 in Middlebor­ough.[118] She was born on 14 Feb. 1771 in Bridgewater.[119] He died, howev­er, on 2 Oct. 1797 in Bridgewater, aged 26 years,[120] but no probate records were filed for his estate. He probably had no children, because he was not mentioned at all in his father’s will. She was unmarried and living at home in 1813 when her father wrote his will.[121] No death or remarriage record was found for her in Bridgewater.

        2413  vii   Olive6 Leach, born on 7 June 1773 in Bridgewater,[122] married Azariah6 Fobes, son of Daniel5 and Hannah5 (Standish) Fobes, of Bridgewater,[123] on 30 Oct. 1794 in Middleborough.[124] He was a grandson of Joshua4 and Esther (Por­ter) Fobes (Jr.),[125] and of Miles4 and Mehitabel (Rob­bins) Standish (Jr.).[126] He was not found as a head of household in the 1800 federal census, but he was supposedly the Azariah Fobes living in the Borough of Wilmington, New Castle Co., DE, in the 1810 federal census,[127] and in Anne Arundel Co., MD, in the 1820 federal census.[128] He was not found as a head of household in the 1830 federal census, but they probably moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania or Knox Co., Ohio. No death re­cords were found for either of them, but she was called “now deceased” in the 1831 will of her brother Ebenezer Leach. She had at least 6 children, as named in the 1831 will of her brother Ebenezer Leach, order uncertain:

a. Olive7 Fobes, born say ca. 1801 in DE, married John H. Williams on 9 Dec. 1820 in Anne Arundel Co., MD.[129] Olive Williams, daughter of sister Olive Fobes, was mentioned in the 1831 will of her uncle Ebenezer Leach. She was probably living in Gambier, College Township, Knox Co., OH, in the 1850 federal census,[130] but she was not found in Knox Co., OH, in the 1860 federal census. She supposedly died in 1869.[131]

b. Daniel7 Leach Fobes, born supposedly in 1804 in Wilmington, DE,[132] mentioned in the 1831 will of his uncle Ebenezer Leach, supposedly married Mary Ann McDaniels.[133] He was not found in Knox Co., OH, in the 1850 or 1860 federal censuses, but he was living in College Township, Knox Co., OH, in the 1870 federal census, where he was a farmer.[134] He supposedly died in 1880 in Knox Co., OH.[135]

c. Hannah7 Fobes, born on 26 May 1806,[136] supposedly in Wilmington, DE,[137] married Daniel7 Leach Hayward, her first cousin, son of Eliab6 and (2416) Sela6 (Leach) Hayward, on 14 Sept. 1831 in Bridgewater.[138] He was born on 5 Dec. 1804.[139] They were living in Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census, next door to their aunts Bethiah Leach, Lydia Leach, and Susannah Hooper, where he was a farmer,[140] and they were living in Bridgewater where their aunts Lydia Leach and Susanna Hooper were living with them, in the 1855 state census,[141] and in the 1860 federal census.[142] He was executor of the estate of his cousin, Olive Wilbar, in 1868, and they were still living in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census, where he was a farmer.[143] He died testate on 12 May 1871 in Bridgewater, aged 66 years, 6 months, of kidney disease,[144] and she died on 29 June 1883 in Bridgewater, aged 77 years, 1 month, 3 days,[145] they were both buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater.

d. Azariah7 Keith Fobes, born on 15 Jan. 1810,[146] mentioned in the 1831 will of his uncle Ebenezer Leach, supposedly married 1.) Sarah Lloyd, daughter of Samuel and Mary Lloyd,[147] on 20 Dec. 1832 in Cochranville, Chester Co., PA.[148] She died on 17 May 1843 in Knox Co., OH,[149] and he remarried to 2.) Sarah Beaty, daughter of Stephen and Rachel (Butler) Beaty,[150] on 1 Apr. 1844 in Coshocton Co., OH.[151] She was born on 31 July 1816 in VA.[152] They were living in Monroe, Knox Co., OH, in the 1850,[153] 1860,[154] and in the 1870 federal censuses,[155] where he was a farmer. She died on 31 Dec. 1879 in Knox Co., OH,[156] and he died on 17 Jan. 1885 in Knox Co., OH,[157] and they were both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gambier, OH.[158]

e. Ruth7 Dodge Fobes, born supposedly on 8 Nov. 1811 in Wilmington, DE,[159] was still unmarried in the 1831 will of her uncle Ebenezer Leach, supposedly the Ruth Forbs who married Rev. John Thomas Lusby Jacobs on 22 Nov. 1832 in Anne Arundel Co., MD.[160] He was born on 23 May 1809 in MD.[161] They were living in Gambier, College Township, Knox Co., OH, in the 1850 federal census,[162] and in College Township, Knox Co., OH, in the 1860,[163] and 1870 federal censuses,[164] where he was a farmer. He died on 31 Dec. 1877 in Knox Co., OH,[165] and she died on 26 Dec. 1891 in Knox Co., OH,[166] and they were both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gambier, OH.

f. Susannah7 Fobes, born supposedly on 7 or 18 June 1815 in Wilmington, DE,[167] was also still unmarried in the 1831 will of her uncle Ebenezer Leach, supposedly married Levi Fairbanks Drake, of Portland, ME, as his second wife, in 1848.[168] He was born ca. 1807 in ME.[169] They were living in Portland, Cumberland Co., ME, in the 1850 federal census, where his occupation was listed as “provisions,”[170] and in the 1860 federal census, where he was a “provision dealer.”[171] They were living in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY, in the 1870 federal census, where he was a “provison dealer.”[172] He died in 1878 in Portland, ME,[173] and was buried in Western Cemetery in Portland, ME. She died on 28 Aug. 1893 in Cutchogue, Suffolk Co., NY,[174] and was buried in Cutchogue Cemetery in Cutchogue, NY.

        2414 viii   Lydia6 Leach, born on 12 Nov. 1775 in Bridgewater,[175] never married. She was still unmarried in 1831 when her brother Ebenezer Leach wrote his will, and she was living in Bridgewater with her sisters Bethiah Leach and Susannah Hooper next door to her nephew and niece, Daniel L. and Hannah Hayward, in the 1850 federal census,[176] and she was living with Daniel L. and Hannah Hayward in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census, and the 1860 federal census. She died on 14 Feb. 1861 in Bridgewater, aged 85 years, 3 months, 20 days, of a fall,[177] but no probate records were filed for her estate.

        2415   ix   Susanna6 Leach, born on 6 June 1778 in Bridgewater,[178] mar­ried Isaac Hooper, of Bridgewater, on 10 Mar. 1805 in Middlebor­ough.[179] He was born ca. 1776,[180] and proba­bly died on 30 Oct. 1846 in Titicut, MA, aged 70 years,[181] but no probate records were filed for his estate of Plymouth County. She was living in Bridgewater with her sisters Bethiah Leach and Lydia Leach next door to her nephew and niece, Daniel L. and Hannah Hayward, in the 1850 federal census,[182] and she was living with Daniel L. and Hannah Hayward in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census, and the 1860 federal census, and she was a pauper living in the Alms House in Bridgewater in the 1865 state census.[183] No death or probate records were found for her in Plymouth County.

        2416    x   Sela/Celia6 Leach, born on 25 Oct. 1780 in Bridgewater,[184] married Eliab6 Hay­ward (Jr.), son of Eliab5 and Martha5 (Fobes) Hay­ward, of Bridgewater, on 17 Jan. 1804 in Bridgewater.[185] He was born ca. 1769, a grandson of Thomas4 and Constant3 (Keith) Hayward, and of John4 and Martha (Pierce) Fobes (Jr.).[186] They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1810 federal census,[187] and in the Titicut Parish of Bridgewater, MA, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer.[188] Sela Hayward was mentioned in the 1831 will of her brother Ebenezer Leach. He died on 29 Sept. 1851 in Bridgewater,[189] and she died on 31 Mar. 1853 in Bridgewater,[190] and they were both buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, but no probate records were filed for either of their estates. They had at least 3 children, as named in the 1831 will of her brother Ebenezer Leach:

a. Daniel7 Leach Hayward, born on 5 Dec. 1804,[191] married Hannah7 Fobes, his first cousin, daughter of Azariah6 and (2413) Olive6 (Leach) Fobes, on 14 Sept. 1831 in Bridgewater.[192] She was born on 26 May 1806,[193] supposedly in Wilmington, DE.[194] They were living in Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census, next door to their aunts Bethiah Leach, Lydia Leach, and Susannah Hooper, where he was a farmer,[195] and they were living in Bridgewater where their aunts Lydia Leach and Susanna Hooper were living with them, in the 1855 state census,[196] and in the 1860 federal census.[197] He was executor of the estate of his cousin, Olive Wilbar, in 1868, and they were still living in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census, where he was a farmer.[198] He died testate on 12 May 1871 in Bridgewater, aged 66 years, 6 months, of kidney disease,[199] his will dated 12 Apr. 1871, and probated on 10 July 1871, mentioned his wife Hannah F. Hayward, his son Wales Hayward, daughters Evelina F. Hayward, Hannah Maria Hayward, and Olivia W. Hayward, other children Daniel H. Hayward, Albert F. Hayward, Lucretia Fobes, and Martha J. Monroe, and he named his son Wales Hayward as executor of his estate.[200] (See Appendix [H] for a full transcription of his will.) She died on 29 June 1883 in Bridgewater, aged 77 years, 1 month, 3 days,[201] they were both buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater.

b. Ebenezer7 P. Hayward, born in 1808, died on 25 Nov. 1832 in Bridgewater,[202] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, but no probate records were filed for his estate.

c. Ariston7 M. Hayward, born ca. 1813,[203] married 1.) Hannah A. Conant, daughter of Galen and Hannah Conant, of Bridgewater, on 2 Apr. 1837 in Bridgewater.[204] She was born on 17 Aug. 1814 in Bridgewater.[205] They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a shoemaker,[206] and the 1855 state census, where he was a mail carrier,[207] and the 1860 federal census, where he was a farmer.[208] She died on 17 Apr. 1864 in Bridgewater, aged 49 years, 8 months, of “eresepalus,”[209] and he was a widower living in Bridgewater in the 1865 state census, where he was a farmer.[210] He remarried to 2.) Anna Hayward, daughter of Ebenezer and Polly (Wetherbee) Hayward, of Boxborough, MA,[211] on 15 Nov. 1867 in Boxborough.[212] She was born ca. 1824 in Boxborough.[213] They were living in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census, where he was a farmer.[214] He died on 4 June 1894 in Bridgewater, aged 81 years, 6 months, 27 days, of heart disease.[215]

In the Name of God Amen.– I, Daniel Leach of Bridgwater in the County of Plymouth, in the Comonwealth of Massachusetts, yeoman, being of a sound, disposing mind & memory; and calling to mind that it is appointed to all men once to die, do proceed to make & publish this my last will & testament. In the first place, my will is that, my debts should be paid in a convenient time after my decease, by my Executor hereafter named.~

Imprimis. I Give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Bethia Leach, the use & improvement of the one half of my Dwelling House, and one half of the cellar, with the use & improvement of one half of my Real Estate during her widow-hood.– All my indoor moveables & two Cows for her to dispose of as she may think proper.

Item.– I Give and bequeath to my Daughters, namely, Joanna Wilbor–Deborah White & Olive Fobes, two dollars each, besides what I have given them at the time of their marriage.~

Item.– I Give to my other daughters, namely, Bethia, Lydia, Susanna, & Sela Leach, each, an equal share of my estate, with what I gave to my daughter Deborah White, at the time of her marriage, or an equivalent in money, as shall best suit each or either their situation or circumstances, to be paid in houshold furniture, in case that each or either of them should be married – with the privilege of living in my house, as long as they remain unmarried.~

Item.– I Give & bequeath the Rest & Residue of my Estate, Real & Personal (not before disposed of) to my son Ebenezer Leach, his heirs & assigns forever, whom I Constitute and appoint Executor of this my last will & testament.— In Witness whereof, I the said, Daniel Leach have hereunto Set my hand and Seal, this ninth day of January One thousand eight hundred. ~

        Be it remembered that I Isaac Wilbar of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth, Gentleman, being infirm in body but of sound mind & memory, do this fifth day of September ADom. One thousand eight hundred and twenty seven make & publish this my last Will & Testament in manner following, that is to say in the first place, I give to my well beloved wife Joanna the use & improvement during her life of the Easterly half part of my dwelling house & cellar, subject to be improved by my three youngest daughters, as is hereafter described. Also a right in the Outbuildings, so far as is necessary for her comfort & a seat in my pew in the Meeting House & the improvement of all my landed property which I now own except what I have hereafter given to my son Aberdeen as described below, with a right to cut sufficient wood at all times to support one fire, I also give her twenty dollars in money, one good cow & half of my household furniture of every description to be at her own disposal, not to include any of my wearing apparel which I give to my son Isaac.

        Item, I give to my three daughters which are married Viz. Lurana Fobes, Ruth Keith & Lydia Wilbar one dollar each which with what I have heretofore given them I consider to be their full share of my Estate.

        Item, I give & bequeath to my three youngest daughters One hundred dollars each payable in two years after my decease viz: Susannah, Olive & Anna. Also one half of all my household furniture to be equally divided between them and a right to live in the Easterly half part of my dwelling house & a seat in my Pew during the time they may remain single & unmarried & no longer.

        Item, I give, devise and bequeath to my son Aberdeen Wilbar his heirs and assigns about six acres and one quarter of land lying partly on the Southerly & Northerly side of the road and include the land on which his house & other building now standeth, bounded as followeth beginning at a stake & stones on the Southerly side of the road by the Brook, thence South two degrees East by a ditch twenty rods & six links to a stake, to a stake, thence West one degree South twenty one rods and twenty one links to a stake, thence North eight degrees West across the road fifty six rods to a stake & stones, thence East one degree North eighteen rods to a stake in the line of Solomon Keiths land, thence South two degrees East in said Keiths line thirty eight rods and eight links to a stake in the South side of the road, thence North Seventy one degrees East eleven rods & four links by the road to the bound first mentioned, reserving the road two rods wide included in the aforesaid description. Also a five acre lot of tillage land which I bought of Joseph Leach reference being had to his deed of the same for a more particular description. I also relinquish all claim to any reservation for materials or labor of any description which I found towards building the house where he now lives and also my notes of hand against him which I now hold for the payment of money or interest dated previous to the present time shall be considered as entirely cancelled & void at my decease.

        Item, I give, devise & bequeath unto my son Isaac Wilbar Jr. his heirs & assigns all my Real & Personal estate of every description, not before disposed of, subject to the payment of all the Debts and legacies aforesaid.

        I also appoint him sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament.

        In the name of God Amen. I Isaac Wilbar of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth, being in feeble health but of sound and disposing mind and memory do proceed to make this my last Will and Testament.

I give my soul to God its author, and my body to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executrix, herein named.-  And as to my worldly estate I will and dispose of it in the following manner. viz.

First, I give and bequeath to my three daughters, Elizabeth, Alice Antoinette and Emily Jane, each, the sum of twen-five dollars, as they shall severally arrive at the age of sixteen years.

  Second. I give, bequeath and devise to my beloved wife Stella Wilbar all the estate of which I may die seized and possessed both real and personal to be forever for her own use and disposal, after paying therefrom the said legacies to my daughters and all my just debts and incidental charges, subject however to the proper maintenance and suitable education of my daughters aforesaid until they shall severally arrive at the age of sixteen years.

        And it is my Will that my said Wife from the authority which I hereby give to her shall have full power to sell and convey all and any portion of my said estate.

        Lastly. I hereby appoint my said Wife Stella Wilbar sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other and former Wills and declaring this and this only to be my last Will and Testament.

                Last Will of Olive Wilbar.

Know all men by these presents, That I Olive Wilbar of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth State of Massachusetts, being of sound mind and memory, and in my usual good boddy health do make and publish, this my last Will and Testament.

1st I give and bequeath, to my sister Anna Ford three pairs of sheets, three pairs of Pillow Cases, one bedquill, and one bed blanket, my sister Anna, herself choosing these articles from my bed-clothing; I also give to her my large Rocking Chair. I also give and bequeath to my sister Anna Ford One Hundred Dollars

2nd I give to my niece Louisa H. Wilbar my Case of Drawers also one pair of sheets, and one pair of pillow-cases.

3rd I give and bequeath to my sister Lydia Wilbar Ten Dollars.

4th I give and bequeath to my neice Mary Elisabeth daughter of my late brother Isaac Wilbar my half of Pew No 37 in the 3rd Cong Meeting House in North Middleborough, I also give to her my best feather bed and bed-stead; I also give and bequeath to said Mary Elisabeth my two large silver table-spoons

5th I give and bequeath to my neice Alice Antoinette, daughter of my late brother Isaac Wilbar my sett of China Ware; three dining chairs, and one small rocking-chair, I also give and bequeath to the said Alice my sett of small teaspoons.

6th I give and bequeath to my neice Emily Jane, daughter of my late brother Isaac Wilbar, my sett of large silver teaspoons also my large chest, my clothes press, three dining chairs, and one small rocking chair.

7th I give and bequeath to Louisa, wife of George S. Wilbar my second best feather bed and bed-stead.

8th I give and bequeath to George Sanderson Wilbar all the real estate of which I may be possessed at the time of my decease on the condition that the said George Sanderson Wilbar shall pay to his brother Oliver Cromwell Wilbar, a sum of money equal to one quarter of the value of said Real Estate, which value shall be determined by the appraisal of three disinterested men said appraisers to be appointed by the Executor of this Will.

9th I give and bequeath to Isaac Sanford Wilbar Five Dollars.

10th I give and bequeath all the residue of my Personal Estate one fifth part to my sister Lydia; One fifth part to my sister Anna, One fifth part to my late sister Lurana’s children One fifth part to the children of my late brother Aberdene, One fifth part to the children of my late brother Isaac, the division of said residue to be made by Louisa wife of my nephew George S. Wilbar assisted by any person whom she may choose.

11th I ordain and appoint Daniel L. Hayward Executor of this my last Will and Testament.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal and declare this to be my last Will and Testament, in the presence of the witnesses named below, this eighth day of July in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred Sixty-four.

Know all men by these Presents that I Anna Ford of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth, Widow, being weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind and memory do this fifteenth day of March A.D. Eighteen hundred and seventy three make publish and declare this my last Will and testament = Viz. revoking all former wills by me made.

First. I wish all my just debts and charges to be paid; that my body be respectable interred, and that a suitable monument mark the place of my burial.

Second. I give to my beloved niece Betsey P. Dunbar all my household furniture, wearing apparel, table ware and Silver ware of every description.

   In the name of God, Amen, I Ebenezer Leach of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth & Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Yeoman, being in feeble health, but of a sound disposing mind and memory and calling to mind that it is appointed unto all men once to die do proceed to make my last Will & Testament and publish the same in the following manner. First of all I commend my soul to God who gave it through the merits and mediation of the glorious Redeemer; and my body to the dust, whence it was taken to be buried in a christian manner in the hope of a resurrection to a glorious immortality. And as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bestow upon me this life I give & dispose of it in the following manner, Viz.

        1st. To my beloved wife Eunice Leach, I will and bequeath the proper use & improvement of all the Estate both Real and Personal of which I may die possessed, during her natural life, with the exception of three shares in the Proprietors buildings hereafter named in a legacy to Rev. Mr. Colby.

        2d. I will and bequeath to Rev. Philip Colby of Middleborough in the County & State aforesaid, Clerk, my right consisting of three shares in the Proprietors House in this Parish, the same now occupied by him as a Parish House situate in Middleborough together with land & outbuildings and whatever may pertain to said right, to his use & benefit forever, possession to commence immediately on my decease.

        3d. I will and bequeath to my Sister Susannah Hooper of said Bridgewater Fifty dollars to be paid to her after the decease of my Wife.

        4th I will & bequeath to Susannah Wilbar, Bethiah Leach, Lydia Leach, Sela Hayward & Deborah White my natural sisters and to Daniel Hayward, Ebenezer P. Hayward and Ariston M. Hayward children of my aforesaid sister Sela Hayward and to Ruth Fobes, Olive Williams, Daniel L. Fobes & Azariah K. Fobes children of my sister Olive Fobes now deceased, one dollar each to be paid them after the decease of my wife. Also the same sum each payable at the same time to Isaac K. White, Samuel D White & Sidney White children of my sister White aforesaid. Also same to Isaac Wilbar son of my sister Wilbar.

        5th. I will and bequeath to Deborah S. White, Cybil Tilson, children of my aforesaid sister White and to Susan Wilbar, Olive Wilbar and Anna Wilbar children of my aforesaid sister Wilbar and to Hannah Hayward and Susannah Fobes children of my deceased sister Fobes, the whole of my Estate not otherwise disposed of in this instrument and which may remain after the decease of my Wife to be divided equally among them.

Lastly, I appoint and constitute Zephaniah Fobes of said Bridgewater, Gentlemen, sole executor of this my last Will & Testament revoking all Wills or Testaments by me heretofore made or named declaring, ratifying & confirming this to be my last Will & Testament. It is also my Will that the said Fobes in conjunction with my Widow should superintend and manage the property of which she may be in possession after my decease, the use of which is bequeathed to her by his instrument.

In the name of God Amen I Eunice Leach of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts considering the uncertainty of life and being of a sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and Testament as follows.

First of all I commend my soul to God who gave it through the merits of the blessed Redeemer and my body to the dust to be buried in a christian manner – in the hope of a happy resurrection.

and as to such worldly estate as I may leave I give and dispose of it in the following manner

First. I give and bequeath to the three daughters of my late sister Bethiah Bassett viz to Abagail Dunbar Bethia Staples, & Eunice Bassett each the sum of fifty Dollars and also to each of them my said neices one bed and one suit of bed clothes to furnish each bed

Second – I give and bequeath to William L. Richmond, Edwin A. Richmond Samuel W. Richmond and Homer B. Richmond children of my late niece Sophronia Richmond fifteen dollars each.

Third – I give and bequeath to the American board of Commissioners for foreign Missions fifty dollars

Fourth – I give and bequeath to Daniel Hayward and Austin M. Hayward (sons of Elias Hayward) fifty dollars each.

Fifth – I give and bequeath to Nathan B. Dunbar of said Bridgewater Mason and his wife Betsey H. Dunbar jointly the sum of fifty dollars and all my household Furniture not herein before disposed of and also all my other estate wherever the same may be found after paying my just debts and incidental charges and a suitable monument to mark my resting place. All the aforesaid Legacies to be paid in six months from my decease.

Lastly – I hereby appoint Isaac Fobes of said Bridgewater Esquire to be my sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made

Know all men that I Daniel L. Hayward of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this as and for my last will and testament.

First. I do hereby appoint and constitute my son Wales Hayward, Executor of this my last Will and testament, and direct him to pay out of my estate, all my just debts and funeral expenses, and all legacies hereafter named.

Second. I do give to my two daughters Evelina F. Hayward and Hannah Maria Hayward each, the sum of Four Hundred Dollars, and to my daughter Olivia W. Hayward Three Hundred Dollars. And to each of the above named three daughters, a home at my homestead during their lives, so long as they remain unmarried.

Thirdly. I give to each of my other children Daniel H. Hayward, Albert F. Hayward, Lucretia Fobes, and Martha J. Morse, One Dollar each.

Fourthly. I do give and bequeath to my beloved wife Hannah F. Hayward, the improvement of the home-farm on which I live, together with the buildings contained thereon, during her life. Also the Pew numbered 40 in the Congregational meeting-house, and shed appertaining thereto.

Fifthly. I give, and bequeathe to my son Wales Hayward, all the rest and residue of my estate, comprising all out-lands, Clothing Carpenters, and Farming Tools, and after the death of my wife Hannah F. Hayward above named, the homestead, farm, stock, pew, and shed above named, comprising all my property of which I may die possessed, both real and personal, for his use and behoof forever.
