Families of the Children of Mary4 Washburn and Thomas Perkins

Mary Washburn’s paternity is not a certainty, but it appears that the family of Joseph and Hannah (Latham) Washburn is the only one to whom she could belong, having eliminated her as a possible daughter of each of Joseph’s brothers. The case if further strengthened by the frequent use of the name Hephzibah in her family, after her purported older sister Hephzibah Washburn. The two daughters and three sons of Mary Washburn remained in the Bridgewater area, but a few of her grandchildren moved to Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Rhode Island, and a number of her descendants married descendants of other branches of the Washburn family.

(478.) Mary Perkins, eldest daughter of (132) Mary4 Washburn, probably (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 10 Jan. 1717/18,[1] married (572) Josiah5 Hayward (Jr.), son of Josiah4 and (151) Sarah (Kinsley) Hayward,[2] on 11 Feb. 1741 in Bridgewater.[3] He was born on 13 Apr. 1717 in Bridgewater,[4] a grandson of Nathaniel3 and Elisabeth (Crossman) Hayward (Jr.), of East Bridgewater,[5] and of Samuel and (62) Mary3 (Washburn) Kinsley (Jr.).[6]

Mary (Perkins) Hayward died on 17 May 1756 in Bridgewater,[7] and Josiah Hayward (Jr.) remarried to Mary Dunham on 16 Nov. 1756 in Bridgewater.[8] On 28 Aug. 1765 Josiah Hayward, of Bridgewater, was appointed guardian of his daughters Lois and Sarah Hayward, and son Josiah Hayward, “in right of their grandfather Thomas Perkins, of Bridgewater.”[9] Mary (Dunham) Hayward died on 2 June 1761 in Bridgewater,[10] and Josiah remarried again to Dinah Muxham, daughter of Edmund Muxham, of Middleborough, on 22 Sept. 1768 in Middleborough.[11] On 27 June 1783 Josiah Hayward, cordwainer, and wife Dinah, sold to Jabez Muxham, John Muxham, Jr., and Thomas Muxham, their right in the estate of Edmund Muxham, of Plympton, “who was honored father of the said Dinah.”[12]

Josiah Hayward (Jr.) was not listed as a head of household in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census. He died on 21 Dec. 1797 in Bridgewater, “old,”[13] but no probate records were filed for his estate. Dinah (Muxham) Hayward died on 4 Dec. 1822 in Bridgewater, aged 75 years.[14] (See Plymouth Fourth Generation for his children by Mary Dunham and Dinah Muxham.)

Mary (Perkins) Hayward had four children who died young, two surviving daughters and a son, as proven by their 1765 guardianship:[15]

        1510     i   Mary Hayward, born on 13 Nov. 1742 in Bridgewater,[16] died on 29 Aug. 1747 in Bridgewater.[17]

Moses Simmons was not a head of household in Massachusetts or Maine in the 1790 federal census, but he was probably the Moses Simmons who was living in Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1791 federal census.[27] He died on 17 Aug. 1824 in Woodstock, VT, aged 84 years,[28] and she died a widow on 25 Aug. 1834 in Woodstock, VT, aged 81 [sic] years,[29] and they were both buried in Prosper Cemetery in Woodstock, VT. They had at least one daughter:

Abraham6 “Abram” and (938) Rebecca5 (Leonard) Washburn,[31] in ca. 1790, probably in Pomfret, VT, and they moved back to Bridgewater, MA, in ca. 1800. He was born on 22 Oct. 1766 in Bridgewater,[32] a grandson of (363) Nathaniel5 and Mary (Pratt) Washburn, and of (208) Josiah4 and (356) Jemima5 (Washburn) Leonard (Jr.).[33] He died on 9 Feb. 1843 in Bridgewater, aged 76 years,[34] and she was living in Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census, with the family of her daughter, Rebecca Holmes.[35] (Continued under the family of Capt.          Ebenezer Keith died testate on 12 Apr. 1778 in Bridgewater, of small pox, aged 61 years.[50] His will was dated 21 Oct. 1773, witnessed by Ephraim Keith, Gershom Richmond junr, and Elisha Crossman, and probated on 6 July 1778. He named his eldest son, Luther Keith, and his son Ebenezer Keith (Jr.) as executors of his estate, and he mentioned his wife Hepzibah Keith, daughters Hipzibah and Uranna, who were under 18, daughters Rachel, Susanna, Mary and Lucy, who were all presumably over 18, son Amos Keith, who was of age, and sons Caleb, Calvin, and Alexander, who were all minors, in addition to eldest son Luther, and son Ebenezer Keith.[51] (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.)     [37] Mitchell, History of Bridgewater, p. 181, says Sarah “married at Wareham and afterwards P. Turner,” however according to Bridgewater VRs, Vol. 1, p. 154, and Vol. 2, p. 567, Sarah Hayward, the wife of Plato Turner, was born on 2 Apr. 1769, and died of Cancer in Bridgewater on 29 Apr. 1830, aged 61 years, which agrees with a 1769 birth year, but eliminates her as a daughter of Mary (Perkins) Hayward, who died in 1756. It could be that Sarah Hayward, wife of Josiah and Mary (Perkins) Hayward, died sometime after the 1765 guardianship, but before 1769, and Josiah gave that name to another daughter by his second wife, born in 1769.
